Question:
I'm 1 month pregnant and am still breastfeeding my 13-month-old daughter. When is an appropriate time to wean her? She's down to two feeds a day, one in the morning and one at night.

Answer:
The appropriate time to wean her is when you're ready or when she shows signs that she's willing. Your breasts may be a bit tender now that you're pregnant again, and you may feel like stopping now. Or your daughter may be giving signals that she's ready to stop being breastfed as part of the bid for independence that is the main developmental work of the second year. In any case, the taste of your milk will change when your pregnancy reaches 36 weeks and she is likely to wean herself then, if not before. Some mums continue to breastfeed two babies (called tandem nursing). If that's the case with your daughter, you need to be sure that her needs for independence and moving on are being met. My own opinion is that you should work to wean her now so that both of you can adjust to her new role as toddler/older sister. Feeling displaced with the new baby at the breast will be hard on her (and you!) later. I'd give her as much time as possible to adjust to her new status as big sister before the baby arrives. It's usually easier to eliminate the morning feed first and give the night-time one up last. To ease the transition, her dad may want to step in at night to develop a new bedtime routine that doesn't include breastfeeding. You can get back to being the one to guide her in her nightly rituals when you both have some distance from the breastfeeding part of your relationship. It may also help to establish some new ways to cuddle and be close - allow plenty of time for bedtime stories, singing and rocking, and lots of hugs and kisses.
