Article Summary
A babysitting circle of local parents can offer support and security. If you can find a group of like-minded mums and dads, why not give it a go? Not only will it give you more freedom but it's good for your children when you have lots of positive interaction with other adults.
MUM CARE
Why not find or start a babysitting group in your neighbourhood for parents who have more than one child, so as to give yourself more time.
In a babysitting co-op, all the participants get tokens for the hours they put in babysitting for other families and then “pay” for their own babysitting by redeeming the tokens. Of course, you need to make sure that all the participating parents share similar basic philosophies on discipline and have the same basic expectations of care.
Actually, babysitting co-ops can provide a modern-day substitute for the extended families we used to live in and be a source of security and support for many families. And, did you know that research suggests that children’s sense of their own competence is helped when their parent or parents have lots of connections and regular contact with other adults.
And it’s great fun for your children to be with other adults and learn about different styles of interacting and playing.
