Evening classes, or daytime classes if your children's schedules permit, can be a fantastic way of exploring new interests and meeting new people. Mother-and-baby sessions are a tried-and-tested way to get in touch with other like-minded mums in your area.

What about joining an evening class yourself now that things are beginning to settle into routines at home? Just like your older child, you too could benefit from a few hours with people of your own age! Have a think about what you’d really enjoy learning one evening a week.

There are usually plenty of local classes run for busy parents in the evening. It could be Japanese flower arranging, a new foreign language, English literature, archaeology, or whatever takes your fancy. There are all sorts of classes available in the evenings, and stretching your mind and concentrating for a while on something other than the children can be a real boost.

An exercise class can also be very beneficial, partly because of the endorphins that get released into your body but also because adults tend to laugh a lot during such classes. And there’s nothing quite like laughter to relax you. You might also meet new friends. If you haven’t already done so, once your older child is in nursery school during the day, you might also consider joining a mother-and-baby class, where again you could meet new friends.

Ideally, it would be really nice for you to meet another mum with a baby and older child so that you can discuss and share the problems of having to meet the conflicting needs of the different members of a larger family.
