As well as joy and excitement, the arrival of your new baby can be stressful and unsettling. What can you expect?
JUGGLING EMOTIONS:

Your older child is probably excited at the thought that he is going to have a new little friend to play with, but he’ll need to be patient, of course, because the baby won’t be able to play for some months to come. Obviously for your older child, love and jealousy will probably compete for some time to come, but rest assured that, with a positive attitude from his parents, love will ultimately win out.

But actually, during these first days back home, all the family will be juggling a complex mixture of emotions. For you, it will probably be the tug of being torn between so many demands on your time. This is not just your two children, but also your partner and all the hassles of everyday living. Your partner will probably be experiencing complex feelings of joy mixed perhaps with a fear of being left out.

Of course, for the moment your tiny newborn is not yet experiencing these contradictory feelings. She is simply interested in milk, warmth and dry nappies, although even during these very early days, budding emotions may well start to sow their roots.
